The British tend not to take themselves and their problems seriously. Ethnologist Kate Fox, who wrote a book about the islanders and their characteristics, says it’s taboo. So some people like to react to the country’s general misery, dilapidated schools, deteriorating health system and the widening gap between rich and poor with humor. But with what’s happening now, even the British can’t stop laughing.

Jo Cox can tell you a thing or two about this. Cox works for a debt justice organization London. This wants to put an end to the exploitation of people due to ever-increasing debts. The organization’s headquarters are located in Oxford House, A community center in the Tower Hamlets area East London. “When I walk out the door, I’m immediately confronted with the problems we’re dealing with,” the 37-year-old says. “There are high levels of poverty, inequality, poor housing and all the problems that go with that.”
