A look at the research: short reports: OSIRIS-REx – Mail from Space
With the successful landing of the return capsule of the OSIRIS-REx space probe on September 24, 2023, NASA is opening a new chapter in asteroid research. The capsule contains rocks from the minor planet Bennu, which the probe collected from the site in October 2020.

Four hours before reaching the Earth’s atmosphere, the capsule separated at 10:42 a.m. CEST at a distance of 102,000 kilometers from Earth, and the mother probe performed a propulsion maneuver for its on-board engines to leave the collision course after 20 minutes. Instead, it flew close to Earth at a distance of at least 780 kilometers, with Earth’s gravitational field dramatically changing its orbit around the sun. Meanwhile, the probe got a new name: OSIRIS-APEX, which stands for OSIRIS-APophis EXplorer. This is an indication of its next target, the asteroid 99942 Apophis, which the probe is scheduled to explore in 2029 shortly after its spectacular flyby extremely close to Earth on April 13, 2029.
