Pope Francis will speak at the COP28 global climate conference in Dubai on December 2. The Vatican published the program for the upcoming papal visit on Thursday.
Aside from his speech at the climate summit, only a few appointments are scheduled for the head of the Catholic Church. With your arrival in Dubai late on Friday evening, December 1st is just arrival day. On Saturday, after the Pope’s speech at the summit, there will be a number of bilateral meetings behind closed doors. Before leaving on Sunday, Francis will deliver a greeting at the opening of the Interfaith Pavilion.
Repeated calls for climate protection
Since the beginning of his term, the Pope has consistently called for greater climate protection. In a recently published warning message, he stressed the importance of holding the UN conference from November 30 to December 12. If people go beyond their petty interests, the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) could lead to a significant acceleration of the energy transition through effective commitments, the Pope wrote in the “Praise be to God” document.
Francis’ last visit to the Arabian Peninsula was to the Kingdom of Bahrain at the end of 2022. In 2019, he visited Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. (sic)
