Analysis – Arnold wanted to be different from Woodward but fans still wanted him out
Arnold and Woodward are friends, both graduated from the University of Bristol and share the same background in finance. They are Glazer’s assistants.
Neither man should have found himself so powerful at United, but a new era is now on the horizon.
Arnold replaced Woodward as the club’s kingmaker in February 2022 when he was appointed chief executive, but he spent just 21 months in the role and his expected departure was confirmed on Wednesday morning.
Why did United appoint Patrick Stewart?
With Arnold gone, United needed an interim appointment as CEO and they turned to Stewart.
Although he has only taken on the role on an interim basis, he will still be tasked with steering the ship at United in a time of turmoil.
United believe he is a safe person to do so.
