The new world champion hails from Great Britain
First Carcassonne World Championship in Hearn
People were everywhere. The tournament tables in the H2Ö Games Center at Hölkeskampring 2 were as quiet as a mouse. The World Championship of the classic board game “Carcassonne” took place there for the first time on Saturday (October 7, 2023) this year. The “SPIEL” trade fair takes place at the same time in Essen (report by Hallohern).
There are 43 countries
43 countries participated in the World Cup. After a short opening and explanation of the rules by Game Center Boss Thomas Moder, the players began. The game was initially played in the preliminary round before the winner was decided in several knockout rounds.
Families, friends and other spectators were also sure to support their favourites. Of course, players and spectators were able to strengthen themselves. Gerd Herzog, owner of the snack bar “Die Currywurst” in Wanné, offers international guests the perfect refreshment with the Ruhrpott classic of the same name. Vegetarians can enjoy an extensive vegetarian buffet.
Exciting finale
In exciting matches, it was gradually decided which players would face each other in the finals. In the end, Latvia’s Alexei Begushev and Great Britain’s Matt Tucker faced off in the final. In a thrilling game, Matt Tucker won in the end.
First match win
This was Matt Tucker’s first time participating in a tournament and he immediately won the winner’s trophy. Incidentally, it was Great Britain’s first tournament win in 16 years.
Games Center boss Thomas Moder was very happy about the successful tournament in an interview with Hallohern. “It was a great atmosphere. The participants were enthusiastic – about the atmosphere too – and our expectations were more than met,” Moder said.
He added: “We are still excited. It was just fantastic. It’s great to see the first World Cup in Herne being well received by the people.”
Although a decision on whether to host the World Cup in Herne again will be made after the gaming fair, the chances of the Carcassonne World Cup returning to Herne next year are not bad.
