It’s a celebration not many people get to experience: Former US President Jimmy Carter celebrated his 99th birthday this weekend. According to media reports, the Democrat celebrated the special day at home with his family. His hometown of Plains, Georgia, celebrated the former president all weekend. Although the actual birthday is only on Sunday, there were various events in Carter’s honor on Saturday.

US President Joe Biden also released a birthday video. “I admire you because you have incredible integrity, character and determination,” he said. “I hope I can be half as good a Chancellor as you.” In front of the White House in the US capital, Washington, there was a huge cake stand with 99 engraved on it. Greetings poured in from all over the country for the birthday boy.

Carter has been receiving palliative care at home with his family since mid-February. The foundation he founded announced at the time that the former president did not want to take further medical steps after a series of hospital stays. A week ago, the former president surprised everyone with a public appearance at a groundnut parade in the plains. Carter and his wife Rosaleen appear in a dark limousine.
