Galaxy S24: Samsung returns to its Exynos chipset with RDNA3 GPU

Samsung is once again designing its own systems on chip (SoCs) for smartphones. The manufacturer recently announced the Exynos 2400 after a year-long break. It is expected to be included in the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones – as per tradition, this should be the case at least with the European versions.

After mixed results for the Exynos 2200 (Galaxy S22), Samsung has exclusively used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor in the Galaxy S23. According to the first criteria, the new Exynos 2400 can at least compete with this processor, and in some cases even surpass it.

Preliminary results appeared in Geekbench 6.2. In the single-threaded test, the fastest CPU core managed nearly 2,100 points; In the multithreading test, all CPU cores together scored a good 6,500 points. Here the Exynos 2400 will be much faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which manages an average of 1881 or 5158 points.

Samsung compares the Exynos 2400 in its ad Only with the Exynos 2200 which is almost 2 years old. The CPU is said to be 70 percent faster, and the built-in AI accelerator is by a factor of 14.7. The company is claimed to be using the fastest standard ARM cores for smartphones: one Cortex-X4, five Cortex-A720 (with different clock frequencies) and four Cortex-A520. The upcoming main competitor Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will likely have a similar configuration.

On the GPU side, Samsung is working on further cooperation with AMD. The Exynos has a small GPU with AMD’s RDNA3 architecture, which is a little sister to the Radeon RX 7000 and Radeon 780M graphics cards in the Ryzen 7040. With 12 compute units (768 shader cores), the GPU is said to have a fairly wide architecture. Samsung calls it the Xclipse 940.

Samsung is supposed to produce the Exynos 2400 using its own 4nm technology and not after its own 3nm process. According to Samsung, the latter will be suitable for fans since 2022, but no major chipsets have been announced yet. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will once again be produced by TSMC with 4nm architectures, and should therefore have a significant manufacturing advantage.
