We manage comments. Our goal is to provide objective comment to the general readership. By screening submissions, we provide a space in which readers can share smart and informed feedback that enhances the quality of our news and information.
While most comments will be posted if they are relevant and not offensive, decisions of moderation are subjective. We will make it as carefully and steadily as possible. Due to the volume of reader comments, we are unable to review individual moderation decisions with readers.
We value thoughtful comments that represent a group of opinions that quickly and politely make their point. We make an effort to protect discussions from repeated comments either by the same reader or from different readers
We follow the same standards of taste as the daily newspaper. Some of the things we will not tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including insults and letters followed by dashes), commercialization, impersonation, lack of association, proselytizing and shouting. Do not include website URLs.
We do not modify comments. Either it was approved or deleted. We reserve the right to edit a comment excerpt or excerpt in an article. In this case, we may fix the spelling and punctuation.
We welcome strong opinions and criticism of our work, but we do not want comments to become embroiled in discussions of our policies and we will moderate accordingly.
We appreciate it when readers and people quoted in articles or blog posts indicate errors in fact or assertion, and will investigate all assertions. However, these suggestions must be sent via email. To avoid distracting other readers, we will not post comments indicating a correction. Instead, corrections will be made in a blog post or article.
