NGC 7822 is an emission nebula located in the constellation Mallow. The distance to Earth is estimated at about 3000 light years. NGC 7822 is also known as Sharpless 171 (Sh2-171). Its circumference is somewhat reminiscent of a question mark, so it is often called the “cosmic question mark”, where the question mark point is called Sh2-170. When this shot was taken, the focus was on the H-alpha emission line, and only RGB exposures were used to show the background sky and star colors.
