On Monday night, the northern lights could be clearly seen from high vantage points in canton Bern. Beautiful images .

For the second time this fall, the northern lights could be seen from some places in canton Bern late Sunday evening. This is rare: the landscape can usually only be seen in the polar regions.
From Rümligen in Gürbetal, the northern lights can be seen high above the Belpberg.

“The red color was so intense it could be seen with the naked eye!” wrote reader reporter Markus Knobuhler. This photo was taken shortly after 6pm from Seehavten in Gorbital.

This colorful phenomenon can already be seen in Switzerland on the night of September 24 to 25. The reason for this is strong solar activity, as the Federal Meteorological Office announced at the time.
At 11 p.m., the Alps were shining: This photo was taken by a webcam mounted on the mast of the Eiger Express train above Grindelwald.

The aurora borealis results from the interaction between charged particles from space and the Earth’s atmosphere. They are powered by the so-called solar wind. This consists of charged particles, mainly electrons and protons, that are expelled from the Sun.

The color of the northern lights depends on the type of gas molecules that the charged particles in the atmosphere interact with and the altitude at which these interactions occur.
Green northern lights often arise from reaction with oxygen at higher levels of the atmosphere, while red or violet colors can arise from reaction with nitrogen.
You would also have seen the northern lights from the Grimsel River – if the Oberarbahn Valley station had not been in front of the webcam.
