At St. Francis of Assisi in Weston Carnival includes rides, games, and begins with Blessing of the Animals

Step right up for the second annual Saint Francis of Assisi Carnival on Saturday, Oct. 6, from noon to 6 on the church grounds, 35 Norfield Road, Weston. Admission is free for all ages and $20 unlimited ride bracelets will be sold on site.

The community at large is invited to take part in this fun-filled afternoon. The rain date is Saturday, Oct. 13, from noon to 6.

The event takes place in early October to coincide with Saint Francis of Assisi’s Feast Day, Oct. 4.

A Noah’s Ark-style procession of animals is a common sight at Catholic churches during autumn. It is the Blessing of the Animals — a custom conducted in remembrance of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. This ritual pays tribute to the saint’s steadfast devotion to animals, true companions for many.

All are welcome to bring pets to the church parking lot on Oct. 6 at 11:30 a.m. for the ceremony (you need not be a parishioner). Father Michael Dunn will bless the animals with holy water, while reciting a special prayer near the statue of Saint Francis. Owners will also receive blessed medals for their pets.

Following the animal blessing, the festivities begin. The crowd will be entertained by a DJ and treated to traditional carnival fare — hamburgers, hotdogs, sausage and peppers, grilled chicken sandwiches, pizza, cotton candy and much more.

For kids, there will be ring and beanbag toss games, hair feather extensions, caricatures, face painting, temporary tattoos and pumpkin decorating. Tweens and beyond may buy tickets to win signed sports memorabilia, spin a wheel for prizes, bungee jump, or try the 60-foot obstacle course.

Other attractions include a rock climbing wall, inflatable rides, and a mechanical bull.

Adults may bid on varied gift baskets and mystery boxes containing gift cards valued at $10 and above.

In addition, a 5,500-watt generator (complete with mobility cart) will be auctioned off at the end of the event. Tickets are sold after all masses leading up to Oct. 6, and also during the carnival. The winner need not be present.

Saint Francis Pastor Father Dunn is pleased to once again host the carnival. “Our annual carnival is a great community event, a wonderful family outing, and really fun for everyone. In addition, the early October timing allows us to honor our parish’s patron saint with a fitting celebration.”

Adult volunteers are needed to man the booths and games and a sign up board is located in the church vestibule. Those outside the church community may lend a hand as well. If interested, contact Sandra Jester at [email protected] or 203-247-2354.

“The Saint Francis Carnival is back and bigger and better than ever. We welcome Westonites and beyond to spend the day with us and join in the excitement,” Ms. Jester said.

For more information, visit or call the rectory at 203-227-1341.

There will be no 5 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass on Oct. 6.
