Arctic winds are inching their way through Weston

Arctic winds could make it feel 10-below Thursday; more on Friday snow

Weston and the region is in for another cold, windy day that could feature wind chill temperatures well below zero. And snow, although not as much as earlier forecasts showed, is still expected later Friday, Jan. 25, according to the National Weather Service:

“As low pressure takes shape off the Mid-Atlantic Coast this morning, and strong high pressure builds east from the upper midwest, a gusty northwest flow will return today,” according to a weather service special statement issued Thursday morning, Jan. 24. “Gusts by mid morning will be approaching 25 mph and as high as 30 mph this afternoon. This will result in wind chill values this morning from around zero at the coast to as low as 10-below across the interior.

“During afternoon hours, wind chill values will be in the single digits for most of the region but then drop back to zero to 10-below tonight.”

The arctic air is expected to remain in place Friday and Friday night as low pressure passes off to the southeast and brings some light snow late in the day, according to the weather service. “Slow moderation in temperature and wind chills should then begin over the weekend into early next week in the wake of this system.”

Wednesday night and Thursday morning the temperatures got down into the mid single digits with wind chill below zero.

Thursday’s high in Weston is expected to be near 21 but closer to zero with the wind chill. Thursday night, the low is going to be around eight degrees with a wind chill value of -5.

On Friday, the chance for snow is mainly after 4 p.m. The high will be around 22, according to the weather service. But the wind chill will make it feel like -2. The chance of afternoon snow is 30%.

Snow is more likely Friday night before midnight. It is going to be cloudy with a low around 16 and lighter wind. Chance of snow is 60% Friday night. Accumulations right now is forecast for less than an inch.

Saturday’s high is 27, with eight to 16 mph winds; Saturday’s low isaround 11. Sunday is expected to be sunny with a  high near 30; the low around 17. Monday could bring scattered flurries and a high near 37; Monday night could bring more flurries and a low of 27.

Things are expected to start really getting warmer on Tuesday, which has forecasted high of 44; Tuesday night could feature some rain and low of 35.

Wednesday could bring more showers and high near 48.

Avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, the weather service warns. “For those venturing out, wear a warm coat, gloves and cover your head to protect against frostbite and hypothermia,” the service suggests.

“Limit areas of exposed skin. Dressing in layers can also help protect against the cold. In addition, water needs to be shut off to any water pipes to prevent pipes from bursting.”
