Weston schools name new administrators

There will be some shuffling of Weston school administrators this summer.

The school board announced Friday, June 8, that Doreen O’Leary, assistant principal at Hurlbutt Elementary School, will take over as assistant principal at Weston Intermediate School. She will fill a vacancy being left by the departure of Jason Bluestein, who has accepted a principalship at Burr Elementary School in Fairfield.

The vacancy left by Ms. O’Leary’s move will be filled on an interim basis by Kimberly Kus, curriculum instructional leader for physical education and health as well as a physical education and health teacher at Hurlbutt.

Ms. Kus, a certified school administrator, will serve as interim assistant principal for 2012-13 for 0.6 FTE (full-time equivalent) of her time and will remain as the curriculum leader for P.E. and health during the remaining 0.4 FTE of her assignment.

Lewis Brey, director of human resources for the Weston school district, said under the new teacher contract, the curriculum instructional leader position had already been budgeted at 0.4 FTE for 2012-13. Ms. Kus’s remaining P.E. and health teaching duties will be reassigned to other teachers, he said.

Mr. Brey said in a release that in light of seemingly declining enrollment “and following a careful analysis of the use of school facilities,” the school board plans to review Hurlbutt’s administrative needs for the 2012-13 school year.

At the middle school

The changes to the elementary and intermediate school assistant principalships follow closely on the heels of the announcement a few weeks ago that Weston Middle School Principal Kenneth Craw was named Weston’s assistant superintendent. Beginning July 1, he will replace Tom Scarice, who left the district to take a job as superintendent of the Madison school district.

Mr. Brey said the search for a new middle school principal is “in full swing.” The application deadline was Friday, June 1, and interviews with a search committee are set to begin next week.

The school board expects to hire a new middle school principal before July 1.

At the intermediate school

Mr. Bluestein has been the assistant principal at Weston Intermediate School since 2009.

Weston Superintendent Colleen Palmer said, “Jason’s leadership has been invaluable to the success of Weston Intermediate School. He will be sorely missed, and I wish him great success in his new position.”

Before coming to Weston, Mr. Bluestein was assistant principal at a middle school in Southbury, a district instructional improvement teacher and language arts curriculum leader in Fairfield, and a classroom teacher in Woodbridge and Trumbull.

Mr. Bluestein’s replacement, Ms. O’Leary, has been the assistant principal at Hurlbutt since 2010.

Mr. Brey said in his release Ms. O’Leary “has done a wonderful job in partnership with Principal Joanna Genovese to move Hurlbutt forward and make it such a special school.”

Before coming to Weston, Ms. O’Leary worked for the Stamford public schools as the project manager of the GE Foundation Developing Futures in Education Program, as a curriculum associate for math, and as a third and fourth grade classroom teacher.

Before becoming a professional educator, Ms. O’Leary worked in finance as vice president of Market Information Group at the Bank One Corporation, and assistant vice president of Corporate Banking Group at Security Pacific National Bank in California.

Ms. O’Leary holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Georgetown University, an MBA from the UCLA Graduate School of Management, and a master’s degree from Sacred Heart University in elementary education. She is certified in administration and supervision, and elementary education.

She was on the New Canaan school board from 1993 to 2001, serving as its chairman for two years.

At the elementary school

Ms. O’Leary’s replacement as assistant principal at Hurlbutt, Ms. Kus, has been with the Weston school district since 1993. Mr. Brey said Ms. Kus has served as the acting school administrator when the principal and assistant principal have been out of the building.

Ms. Kus began her career in education in 1978 in Michigan. She has a bachelor’s degree in physical and health education from Michigan State University, a master’s degree in school health education from Southern Connecticut State University, and a sixth year degree in educational leadership from Southern Connecticut State University.
