Girls tennis: Barlow stops Weston’s run

Losses to South-West Conference opponents have been a rarity for the Weston High girls tennis team in recent seasons.

In fact, no one on this season’s team experienced the last time the Trojans fell to a league opponent, until last week.

Visiting Joel Barlow on Wednesday, May 2, the Trojans faced what became their biggest challenge of the season. While the five-time defending SWC champs posted two convincing singles victories they came up short in the remaining contests for a 5-2 loss.

It was Weston’s first league loss since 2006.

As usual, the Trojans dominated first singles. Remaining unbeaten in high school matches, Kimmy Guerin surrendered just a game before beating Paige Twombly 6-1, 6-0.

Weston would split the singles matches. Barlow’s Sam Goldburg lost just two games before posting a 6-2, 6-0 win over Catherine Kravchenko. Ali Kudej got the win in the number three spot with 6-4, 6-0 scores against Sarah Greisman.

The Trojans did get the only sweep of the day, coming at fourth singles when Kristen Rivera blanked Lilly Mittleman 6-0, 6-0.

It was a battle of unbeatens at first doubles. Barlow’s Adriana Maconochie and Alyssa Lyon kept their streak going with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Morgan Murray and Jessy Gersh.

Barlow was just as tough in the remaining contests. At second doubles Sarah McCain and Jessica Levine won a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Bari Blitzer and McKenzie Murray.

Just missing a sweep at third doubles, Maddie Frierson and Alyssa Gontzes allowed just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Julia Weisman and Lexie Hero.

Last Wednesday’s match was Weston’s first league loss but it did have a few close calls earlier in the season. One was last Monday when it visited Lauralton Hall and held on to win 4-3.

Guerin just missed a sweep at first singles before beating Mary Kate Fornshell 6-0, 6-1. Kravchenko had a close second set but defeated Paige Palmero 6-2, 7-6.

Greisman had two close sets in her match against Ali Luchini but held on to win 6-4, 7-5. The Crusaders’ only singles win was in the number four spot as Madhu Das defeated Rivera 6-1, 6-1.

Two of the three doubles either went to a tiebreaker or a third set before the Crusaders prevailed. Weston’s lone win was when Morgan Murray and Gersh defeated Emily Janik and Meredith Peloso 6-4, 6-4.

McKenzie Murray and Blitzer took the first set from Lauren Sell and Mary Alice Devaney but the latter pair rebounded to take the match 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. After splitting sets, third doubles opted to play a tiebreaker to decide the match with Kiana Yup and Kim Bischoff edging Weisman and Hero 5-7, 7-5, 11-9.

Weston, now 10-2 overall, visits Greens Farms Academy on Friday, hosts Pomperaug on Monday and ends the regular season at home on Wednesday against Barlow. All matches are at 4:15 p.m.
