Raise a Racquet, a charity tennis tournament to be held at the Weston Racquet Club, is in need of participants.
Scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 26 rain or shine, the tournament must have at least 16 players signed up in order to take place.
All proceeds with benefit the Philanthropic Relief Altruistic and Development Children’s Dental Health Program (PRASAD CHDHP).
PRASAD CDHP provides oral care services and dental health education via a mobile dental clinic. In the past decade, PRASAD CDHP has served more than 62,000 children, providing more than 170,000 procedures, at over 17 different community sites in Sullivan and Ulster counties, N.Y. PRASAD CDHP also provides dental services to infants and expectant mothers who have no other access to that care.
The tournament will feature a round-robin doubles format. Players will be paired with different players for each match.
“We want people to have fun,” said Martin Strasmore, one of the organizers of the tournament.
No stranger to PRASAD CHDP, Strasmore became involved with this charity in the early 1980s while living in India. During that time his wife Kassandra volunteered on a mobile hospital bus for the PRASAD Project, which operates health, education, disaster relief and sustainable development programs.
Since then Strasmore has raised money for PRASAD CHDP in a number of ways. Last year he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro (the highest peak in Africa) and hiked across Iceland.
This July he participated in the coast to coast walk across England, a distance of 200 miles from the Irish Sea to the North Sea.
Each participant will receive a designer gift. Prizes for the men’s and women’s finalists include two weekends at Ocean House in Watch Hill, R.I.
The event begins with registration and warm-up at 1:30 p.m. Play begins at 2 and reception and awards will follow at 6.
The registration fee is $95. No partner is needed.
