Getting closer to leading figures in politics and society: Our newspaper makes it possible through the dialogue series “Cultural Debate”. The next guest on March 7 is Petra Olszewski, Baden-Württemberg’s Minister for Science, Research and the Arts.

Cultural institutions are sounding the alarm across the country with their interest groups. The House of Literature Network recently warned that “the financial collapse of literature communication, readings, conversations and discussions is imminent.” What is happening? Are the basic requirements for publicly funded cultural mediation fundamentally questionable?

Well-trained youngsters are key

As a minister, Petra Olszewski, who was born in Stuttgart in 1965 and was directly elected to the state parliament in the 2021 state elections, faces a huge task across all departments. The important questions in science and research are: How does Baden-Württemberg remain attractive as a university location in a global competition? And how soon after the success of the Cyber Valley project will it take for the next innovation campus projects to become a reality? “In order to be able to meet the challenges – for example, the transformation of the economy, the climate crisis, artificial intelligence and digitization – in the country, we need many well-trained academic specialists, especially in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology,” says Olszowski. Does this require new alliances? How does the country remain advanced in science and research? How does art survive?
