Dusseldorf With a radical change in the business model in Germany, the online platform Ebay wants to break the downward trend in sales. “From March 1, private sales will be completely free for both sellers and buyers,” Oliver Klink, President of Ebay Germany, announced in an interview with Handelsblatt.

So far, Ebay has charged private sellers a base fee of 35 cents plus an 11 percent commission on the total value of the transaction. For commercial merchants, who account for about 80 percent of sales on the platform, sales commissions remain.

With the beta test, which could be rolled out to other markets if successful, Ebay is giving up on sales at first. However, the platform operator hopes that the indirect impact will have a positive impact on its business in the medium term. “We are absolutely convinced that this measure will lead to significant and sustainable growth in Germany,” says Klink.
