His third time as coach of Basel was the shortest: after four defeats in four matches on the sidelines, Heiko Vogel had to leave the club again. Bayern made the announcement on Tuesday after a 3-0 defeat to Lausanne Sport. According to Bayern, the reason for this is “the worsening sporting crisis in the first team.”
Fabio Celestini, born in Lausanne, will coach Vogel from now on until the end of the season. He was most recently coach of FC Sion from November 2022 to March 2023. He was previously on the bench at Lucerne, where he won the Swiss Cup in 2021, Lugano and also Lausanne Sport, and therefore knows the Swiss League well. Celestini is being assisted at Bayern by the current coaching staff.
Since Vogel took over as coach from Timo Schulz on September 29, things have gone very badly for Rotblau in the league. Of the four matches Basel have played since then, they have not gained a single point, not scored a single goal and conceded ten goals. There was no clear upward trend.
Recently, after the 3-0 loss to Lausanne Sport, Vogel himself and captain Fabian Frey spoke out about the fact that the players, at least in the first half, did not do what the coach and his team asked them to do. . So the recently established Sports Committee made the decision to pull the string.
After Heiko Vogel coached Basel’s first team from October 2011 to October 2012 and managed to win the double during this period, he returned to Basel as sporting director on January 1 of this year. Two months later, after the dismissal of Alex Frei, he became interim coach, under whose leadership Bayern managed to reach the semi-finals of the Conference League.
When Timo Schulz was appointed head coach for the 2023/24 season, Vogel became sporting director again. But again only temporarily. With the dismissal of Timo Schulz, his third and shortest spell as coach of Basel began. It’s over now.
