Search ranking: Four physicians from the University of Duisburg-Essen are particularly frequently cited

Four researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) Faculty of Medicine entered this year’s list of the world’s most cited scientists. By ranking Most Cited Researchers, experts from Clarivate Analytics regularly identify those researchers whose publications in the respective year rank within the first one percent of all citations published in one of 21 or several areas. * Essen Medical Research is represented in the 2022 ranking by Prof. Dr. Dr. M. Hans-Christoph Diner, Prof. Bernd Gebel, Prof. D. Dr h. Gerd Heusch and Professor Dr. Dirk Schadendorf.

This year, 6,938 scientists from 69 countries, including 369 from Germany, are on the list of Scholars to be Cited. Germany ranks fourth in the world ranking of the largest of its kind after the USA, China and the UK. Says Professor D. Jan Boyer, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at UDE. “Another tribute to the cutting-edge research carried out in Essen.”

Anyone who reaches the celebrity rating is considered particularly active and above average successful in their field. An essential criterion for inclusion in this ranking is the so-called Hirsch coefficient, abbreviated to H-index. The H-index shows how the work of researchers is viewed around the world and how their results are evaluated.

With an H-index of 125, stroke expert Professor Dr. M. Hans-Christoph Diener joined the Essen Club among those included in the Clarivate ranking 2022. Clarivate analysts count 65,291 citations worldwide referring to publications to which Professor Diener has contributed (citing articles). The neurologist retired in 2016 and was previously Director of the Neurology Clinic at the University Hospital Essen (UK Essen) for 27 years. He is currently working at the Institute of Medical Informatics, Biometrics and Epidemiology, where he heads the Department of Neuroepidemiology. Diener has been listed as a Popular Scholar by Clarivate since 2020.

Prof. Diner follows 53149 article cited and H-indexed from 116 by Prof. D. Dirk Schadendorff, Director of the UK Dermatology Clinic Essen and Director of the West German Oncology Center Essen. The melanoma researcher has already contributed to more than 1,000 publications and has been included in Clarivate’s list of “Cited Researchers” since 2017.

For the fifth time since 2018, heart attack researcher Dr. Dr h. Gerd Heusch’s popular search rankings (H index: 106, citing articles: 20,067). The Director of the Institute of Pathophysiology in Essen, UK, deals, among other things, with functional disorders and pathological changes in the heart and coronary vessels. He was recently accepted as a member by Academia Europaea due to his outstanding scientific achievements.

The fourth representative of the Essen research site is Professor Dr. Bernd Geibel of the Institute of Transfusion Medicine, who heads a working group there. In Clarivate’s selection, the Doctor of Natural Sciences is listed with 10,483 cited articles and an H-index of 42. For him, this is the first international listing as a “highly acclaimed scholar”. His research focuses on the so-called extracellular vesicles. As a kind of ambassadors, membrane articles convey essential information between the body’s cells and can have a significant impact on the course of diseases.
