The California Nebula (designated as NGC 1499 or Sh2-220) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus, and its name derives from its resemblance to the outlines of the US state of California in long-exposure photographs. It is located about 1,000 light-years from Earth and its emission is due to the excitation of the gas that forms the nebula by the nearby star Xi Persei (also known as Menkib, top center in my image).
