There were times when the British would not accept him as their own. A long time ago, it seems long enough. The country has now warmly received him as King Charles III, but it need not remain that way.

In Windsor, Thursday evening, people stood crying at the top of the castle, and some sat on park benches in front of it and grabbed each other, all filmed by the television cameras set up here since the afternoon. Windsor Castle rises above the village without overpowering it, the village and the castle are one entity, just a few steps from the walls, people sit in pubs and drink pints. The Queen has stayed here often and for a long time over the past 70 years of her reign. She loved Windsor, as did Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she died on Thursday.
