Downed tree closes road, causes power outages in Weston

Route 53, commonly known as Newtown Turnpike is closed between Godfrey Road and Valley Forge Road in Weston.

A tree fell across the road at approximately 10:07 a.m. around 345 Newtown Turnpike. Two utility poles broke as a result of the tree falling and another two poles were damaged.

According to Eversource, who are currently on the scene working to fix damages, there are 186 homes without power in Weston.  There is currently no timetable for when power will be back to those homes.

The road will be closed until at least 9 p.m. The town highway department has put up detour signs to help the public get around the closed section of the road.

There were no injuries reported.

Update: As of Wednesday Aug. 10 at 7:15 a.m. Newtown Turnpike was reopened. Power was restored to all 186 homes before 11:30 on Aug. 9.
