Woman and dogs rescued from Weston house fire

Quick action by a Georgetown first responder saved a woman and two dogs from a house fire on 20 Samuelson Road in Weston.

The fire was called in shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 7. Because Samuelson Road is in the Georgetown Fire District, the Georgetown Fire Department was the primary response agency. Weston assisted as mutual aid.

Arriving first on the scene of the fire was Marty Heibeck, first assistant chief with the Georgetown Fire Department.

Heibeck said he saw flames coming from the first floor inside the two-story home. He said smoke was coming from a second-story window where a woman, who appeared to be in her late 20s, was hanging out with a small dog in her arms. The woman was yelling that she couldn’t breathe and that she couldn’t get out of the house.

While Heibeck was waiting for fire engines to arrive, a neighbor brought a ladder over to the house and Heibeck climbed it to rescue the woman.

He took the dog and handed it to the neighbor and then helped the woman down the ladder to safety.

The fire department arrived on the scene and the woman was given oxygen and transported to Norwalk Hospital by Weston EMS to be treated for smoke inhalation.

As firefighters battled the blaze, which was contained inside the house, a woman arrived on the scene, apparently the mother of the woman who was rescued. She told firefighters that another dog was in the house.

Firefighters found the dog in the home, unconscious.

EMTs administered oxygen to the dog and it was revived. The dog was transported to the Georgetown Veterinary Hospital for further treatment.

Heibeck, who was incident command, said the fire inside the home was quickly extinguished. He said very little water was used and no outside structural damage was apparent, just internal damage.

The Georgetown fire marshal is investigating the fire’s cause.

Mutual aid was provided by the Weston, Wilton, Redding, and Redding Ridge fire departments.

The name of the woman transported to the hospital was not released by the Georgetown or Weston fire departments. The Weston assessor’s office lists the owners of the property at 20 Samuelson Road as Edward and Priscilla Huggins.
