Two iPhones were also affected
Excluded from Whatsapp: These 49 smartphones will no longer be supported since 2023
Whatsapp is installed on almost every smartphone in Germany. As the year ends, some will no longer support the service.
Chat with friends, a quick video call to mom or a voice message to co-workers: Whatsapp has become one of the most important means of communication in Germany and many other countries. An important reason: It works on almost every smartphone. However, at the end of the year, a line will be drawn for some devices.
The messenger announced it on his blog. On December 31, a full range of older operating systems will no longer be supported. However, since many devices have not received any updates for a long time, this means in plain language: Whatsapp will no longer fully function on approximately 50 affected smartphones. Device list below.
Whatsapp: infinity fast
The company justifies the move with missing interfaces in the old operating systems of the affected devices. As a result, it will not be possible to guarantee that all Messenger functions will continue to function properly. Whatsapp now launches on Apple iOS 12, Android 4.1, and KaiOS 2.5.0 systems, which are especially relevant in Asia, as well as Jiophone and Jiophone 2 as minimum requirements.
The list of operating systems shows that evacuation is not as tough as one might think. iOS 12 was released in 2018, Android 4.1 even in 2012. Most of the devices that are no longer supported are ten years old. The two iPhones now affected by the evacuation, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c, came out around 2012 with iOS 6 and received software updates through 2016. The iPhone 5s, also nine years old, continues to work. Messenger Whatsapp is one of the applications with the longest support ever. Many other programs pull the plug faster.
