Since modern weather records began, there hasn’t been a warmer New Year than New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve 2021/22. But a year later, those records would falter again. This is what the German Weather Service (DWD) predicted, among others.. With a strong southwesterly current, subtropical air masses from northwest Africa and the Canary Islands reach us and raise temperatures no less than in the south and southwest: up to 21 ° C can be reached in the Upper Rhine. Maximum values here can be three to four degrees Celsius above last year’s peak values.
The jet stream is responsible for this: it bulges strongly to the south over the Atlantic Ocean and “bends” to the northeast again west of Great Britain and the Iberian Peninsula. Germany is on the southeast side of the strong wind band, and thus is on the “warm” side of the jet stream. At the same time, areas of low pressure from the northwest with cold polar air cannot penetrate us in this way.
According to DWD, the powerful jet stream was ignited by winter storm Elliott, which caused chaotic weather and killed dozens in parts of North America. The frigid Arctic air over Newfoundland flows into the relatively warm Atlantic Ocean, creating low pressure there. Thus, low air pressure reached large layers of the atmosphere in the far south, where the Azores elevation already dominates. This turned east across the Mediterranean. Between this rise (which rotates clockwise) and the trough (which rotates counterclockwise), a strong southwest current developed. In addition, at least in the south, there will be increased laxity on Saturday, so that the sun can continue to warm the air masses.
