Two individual wins are enough – Bencic and Golubic led Switzerland to the final – Sport

  • As in 2021, the Swiss women’s tennis reached the final of the Billie Jean King Cup.
  • Viktoria Golubek and Belinda Bencic won their singles matches in straight sets against the Czech Republic.
  • The Australians await the final in Glasgow on Sunday.

Against the Czechs, the most successful team in recent years, Viktorija Golubic presented in a sovereign way. Zurich defeated Karolina Muchova 6:4, 6:4.

Then Belinda Bencic defeated Karolina Pliskova 6:2, 7:6 (8:6). In the second set, she made up for a deficit of 2:5. Doubles are no longer played.

Golubic’s first win over Muchova

As in the last group game, Captain Heinz Gunthardt relied on Victoria Gollbeck (ATP 77) instead of Jill Tishman (WTA 35). The 30-year-old from Zurich has honored his confidence without fail.

In the third duel with former top 20 players Muchova (WTA 149), Golubic won for the first time. The game started perfectly and won 11 of the first 12 points. In the second set, I struggled a bit more in serve games, but after 90 minutes I used my first match point with a serve winner.

Pensik strong nerves

The perfect spec made Belinda Bencic rise again on emotional climax in the second single against Karolina Pliskova (WTA 32). The former world number one was far from convincing on her Scotland debut, but defeated Bencic at the US Open two months ago.

But this time around, the Olympic champion and world number 12 had the upper hand. Bencic obviously won the first set, in the second she blocked a set-top and then kept her nerve in the tiebreak.
