It’s been nearly twelve years since The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero was released in Japan – at that time for Sony’s PSP and PlayStation Vita handhelds. Now JRPG is finally launching as a remaster with some improvements in other parts of the world. But how does the episodic game compare to other games in the series, and is it worth getting into the franchise with Trails from Zero? We want to clarify these questions for you in this game show.
The Legend of Heroes series dates back to the 80s
If you’re not familiar with The Legend of Heroes games, here’s some context: The first title appeared in 1989, but the franchise is divided into three sub-series. The Trails series only started in 2004 with The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. After two more parts of “Paths in the Sky”, “Paths from Zero” appeared, followed by “Paths to Azure”, which together tell a story. You may know the series from the Trails of Cold Steel tetralogy, which is already available as a full key reboot, but is actually set after Trails from Zero.

Do I need to know other Trails games? Unfortunately, only Trails of Cold Steel games are currently available for modern consoles, which originally appeared after Trails from Zero and therefore play no part in the story. For the Trails in the Sky trilogy, which tells you some kind of prequel, you have to use an old console or PC.
The good news is that the tracks from Zero and Trails to Azure (scheduled for a relaunch in 2023) make for a story that stands on its own. So you don’t necessarily have to play the role of ancestors. However, since the titles share the game world, Trails in the Sky branches out to give you more context.

Enough history, let’s go down the paths from scratch. For €39.99, you will get a renewing tool with an exciting campaign that will play you for about 40 hours. You are in control of the special unit SSS (Special Support Section), which gets to the bottom of the various secrets that are supposed to guarantee the system. Your unit consists of only four members – relatively few playable characters of this type, but they are all lovable and offer unique abilities for battles.
The fighting takes place in the fields, so always pay attention to your position on the battlefield.
Here’s how to run Trails from Zero: The game is a bit simpler than the titles of Trails of Cold Steel – this applies to the much smaller game world as well as to the combat system. This exact aspect could make Trails from Zero the perfect entry into the overall chain, at least if you don’t have access to the Sky-Arc. There are also some useful quality of life upgrades such as the option to speed up gameplay.
combat system: Trails from Zero is a classic JRPG with turn-based combat, but it has a tactical element as you move through a network of fields. In addition to regular attacks, there are special maneuvers for which you have to make points in advance. It often has an AoE and can hit several opponents at the same time. If you fully charge your meter, you can even make one final devastating move.
