The United States is back as an observer at the United Nations Human Rights Council

This was announced by an American spokesman at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva on Monday. “We are doing this knowing that the most effective way to improve and reform the work of the United Nations Human Rights Council is through participation in principle,” said Chargé d’Affairs to Marc Cassery.

The United States announced its withdrawal from the Human Rights Council in June 2018 during the era of then-US President Donald Trump. Trump viewed the group of 47 countries as biased, among other things due to its frequent criticisms of Israel. The council also targeted the United States on charges of racism.

After returning to the Paris Agreement and stopping the exit in the World Health Organization, it is another step by the new US administration headed by Joe Biden to cancel the decisions of his predecessor to withdraw from international bodies and commitments.
