The conflict between China and Taiwan – Joe Biden confused by his statements on Taiwan – News

  • US President Joe Biden has again pledged military support to Taiwan in the event of an attack.
  • In a TV interview, he said yes to the question that the United States would defend the island in the event of a Chinese invasion.

“Yes, if there really was an unprecedented attack, would the US armed forces defend the island?” Biden said in a television interview broadcast Sunday night (local time) when asked:

Biden answered Scott Bailey’s questions in 60 Minutes in the taped interview Thursday. Billy asked again: “Unlike Ukraine, to put it bluntly: American forces (…) would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion?” Biden answered in the affirmative again.

The White House corrects the statement

Bailey explained on the program that after the Biden interview, the White House made it clear that US policy had not changed and that the US would not officially say whether US forces would defend Taiwan.

Biden had already made similarly clear statements during a trip to Japan in May, saying the United States had an “obligation” to defend Taiwan in the event of an attack. At the beginning of August, prominent American politician Nancy Pelosi caused tensions with China with a trip to Taiwan.

Biden’s comments anger China

The communist leadership in Beijing considers Taiwan part of the People’s Republic of China and threatens to occupy it. The United States has committed itself to Taiwan’s ability to defend itself – which so far has meant primarily arms delivery. The question of military assistance in the event of an attack was deliberately left open because Beijing would see this as a violation of the “one China principle.”

Biden on Trump and classified documents

In the same interview, the US President also commented for the first time on the criminal investigations against Donald Trump in connection with the seized government documents in the property of his predecessor.

When Biden saw the classified documents seized during an FBI search of Trump’s residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida on August 8, he wondered “how anyone could be so irresponsible,” Biden told CBS Sunday. .

When asked if he would run again in the 2024 presidential election, Biden said it was too early to make such a decision. He intends to run again for the office of President of the United States – if his health permits.
