It blooms from pink to purple and exudes a pleasant scent: Twilight Mosquito was awarded the title of “Orchid of the Year 2024”. The orchid can grow up to one meter high and is therefore one of the largest orchids found in nature, indigenous orchid working groups announced on Saturday at their conference in Arnstadt, Thuringia.

Because of the shape of its flowers, the mosquito plant (Gymnadenia conopsea) can only be pollinated by insects with a long proboscis, such as butterflies. It can be found, among others, in widely grazed meadows as well as in swamps and vernal swamps, as has been announced. In northern Germany its incidence decreases sharply. The reasons are climate changes and the change in the use of meadow areas that has been observed for decades. This species does not grow in densely cultivated agricultural areas.

The habitats of many orchids are threatened. Local orchid working groups in federal states are committed to preserving existing habitats. Since 1988, a native wild species has been named “Orchid of the Year” every year. According to information, there are up to 80 species in Germany.
