Recall Audi Q5 and VW Atlas: engine damage

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and automakers Audi and VW have launched a recall. 74,067 vehicles are currently affected in the United States. Recalling the connecting rod bearing may require a complete engine replacement in Audi Q5, Volkswagen Atlas and VW Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. NHTSA expects the number of vehicles actually affected to be about 1.5 percent, which is about 1,100 vehicles.

Deviations in the mechanical manufacturing process of the connecting rods can increase the amount of particles in the engine oil circuit, which can lead to severe wear and operation and thus damage to the connecting rod bearings. The connecting rod bearing with constantly increasing bearing clearance leads to excessive engine noise. If the excessive engine noise and engine warning light are ignored and the vehicle continues to be driven, this condition can lead to engine damage, which can lead to loss of powertrain and, in rare cases, loss of engine oil. The latter can pose a fire hazard to the vehicle.

These models are affected by recall in the United States:

• Audi Q5 Sportback From production period July 29, 2021 to October 10, 2022 (5,964 vehicles)
• Audi Q5 From the production period from July 29, 2021 to October 11, 2022 (42,689 vehicles)
• Volkswagen Atlas From production period September 9, 2021 to October 10, 2022 (16,135 vehicles)
• Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Production period September 2, 2021 to October 10, 2022 (9,279 vehicles)

A test procedure is currently being developed that will identify which drives are affected by this bug. If an affected motor is found, it will be replaced. The summons can be found at NHTSA under case number 22V-753. Volkswagen’s recall number is 13i4 and Audi’s is 13i5. In Germany there is currently no summons regarding this matter.
