Panasonic GH6 Firmware Update Supports SSD Recording via USB!

Panasonic GH6 Firmware Update Supports SSD Recording via USB!

Something small: John Aldred, editor of diyphotography.net, wrote in a 9/20 comment. This year I mentioned that the Lumix GH6 version 2.2 firmware update was rolled out online. Since 09.27.2019 the update is now available online. The new feature that Aldred thinks users should be most excited about is that it now also supports “live recording and playback of videos/photos via SSD with USB connection,” as the related Panasonic announcement states. According to Aldred, one of the main concerns of GH6 users so far has been that the device should be able to record directly to an SSD.

in toto: In his comment, Aldred addressed some of the technical specifications of the update. The most important are the following:

  • Record on a SSD with a maximum capacity of 2TB with Apple ProRes 422 HQ (max. 1.9Gbps) or 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra with high bitrate.
  • The new update limits SSD size to 2TB, which Aldred says isn’t a huge limitation, in part because 1TB is the standard for USB SSDs these days, he wrote.
  • Minor download: Simultaneous recording via the SD card or CFexpress card slots – while recording to an SSD – is not possible according to Aldred’s formulation.
