Brussels Great Britain and the European Union are set to resume talks on the controversial Brexit-Northern Ireland protocol later this week. The EU is working towards common solutions, an EU spokesman said on Monday. “We need to find these solutions to ensure predictability and security in Northern Ireland.” The last speech of its kind was in February, under the then still-elderly Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

EU Commission Vice-President Maroz Cefcovic tweeted on Friday that he had a good conversation with Britain’s new foreign secretary, James Wise, and that their teams would meet soon.

The British government negotiated the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of its exit from the European Union, but has now declared that deal void. It provides special customs rules for Northern Ireland, which belongs to Great Britain.

And to prevent a re-ignition of the Northern Ireland conflict, the border between the historically sensitive British provinces and the EU state of Ireland was opened.

However, the agreement creates a de facto customs border in the Irish Sea, separating Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK. The EU Commission has threatened to go to the European Court of Justice if Great Britain repeals the regulations. It is unclear whether new Prime Minister Liz Truss can move into the controversy.
