Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak becomes the new British Prime Minister. His only rival, Penny Mordaunt, has withdrawn her nomination in the party’s internal race for the position, she announced on Twitter on Monday.

Liz Truss’ successor has been identified. Rishi Sunak is the name of the new British Prime Minister. His opponent, Benny Mordaunt, withdrew from the race for the position on Monday afternoon.

Here are the most important questions and answers about the election of the British Prime Minister.

What is the composition of the UK government?

The British do not directly elect their prime minister. Because in the UK political system, Parliament has the last word.

Parliament is the highest legislative body in the United Kingdom. It consists of the House of Commons, the House of Lords, and the Crown.

The royal family is the oldest part of the British system of government, but it has lost much of its power over the centuries and is now largely limited to symbolism and ritual – this also applies to the election of a head of government, where only the king appoints the prime minister.

Rishi Sunak is considered the frontrunner to succeed Liz Truss.

How is the House of Representatives formed?

The House of Representatives consists of 650 deputies. The country is divided into 650 electoral districts, in each of which one deputy is elected by the first-party system. It has always been the norm for the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition to sit in the House of Commons.

Majority voting in Great Britain (first after office) means that one party often has an absolute majority in the House of Commons. Experience has shown that the Conservative Party (Conservative) and the Labor Party alternate in governmental responsibility. In fact, the UK has a two-party system.

How is the electoral process?

The 357 Conservative MPs and about 170,000 Conservative Conservative MPs elect the leader of the next party, who will then become Prime Minister.

Tory MPs have until 2pm (3pm CET) on Monday to name their preferred candidate. Candidates must receive at least 100 nominations for consideration. This means that no more than three candidates can be eligible for the election process.

If only one candidate gets 100 nominations, the process ends and that person will be the next prime minister.

If two candidates reach the threshold, Conservative MPs vote for the candidate with the most support. If the second-place candidate is not disqualified, the party’s roughly 170,000 members will participate in an online vote that ends Friday. Then the final result will be announced.

If three candidates receive at least 100 nominations, one person will be disqualified from voting and the first two candidates will enter the online voting.

Didn’t the House of Commons just do this?

Basically yes, but using a different method. When Johnson resigned in July 2022, eight Conservatives were nominated for the position, chosen in five rounds of voting by MPs. Liz Truss defeated runner-up Rishi Sunak in a vote among the 170,000 fee-paying party members.

Nearly two months passed between the resignation of Boris Johnson on July 7 and the election of Truss on September 5.
