Mitt Sinkar and Fliknas Oka speak at the PES Congress in Berlin

A delegation from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) participated in the European Social Democratic Party (PES) conference in Berlin. Members of the HDP delegation are Co-Chair Mitat Senkar, Foreign Policy Spokesperson Veliknas Oka, Council of Europe Representative Faik Yagizai and German Delegate Leyla Emrett.

Speaking at the conference, Senkar stressed that European social democrats must increase their cooperation and solidarity among themselves to counter the rise of far-right and authoritarian regimes in Europe and beyond. In addition, the HDP chairman spoke to European politicians about his party’s views on the upcoming elections in Turkey and also met with Federal Chancellor Olaf Schulz, among others. Filiknas Oka participated in a women’s meeting of the SPE and reported on the HDP’s women’s policy and experiences with gender dual leadership.

Former Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven has been elected as the new head of PES. The Party of European Socialists is a European political party. It includes 33 Social Democratic, Socialist and Labor parties from across the European Union, the United Kingdom and Norway, as well as other associated parties from several other European countries and Turkey. The European Parliament has 135 of the 751 members of the European Parliament. The PES group, which includes other parties, is called the Progressive Alliance Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D) and has 145 members.
