Former Finance Minister Sunak wants to become the next British Prime Minister – he has officially announced his candidacy. Former Prime Minister Johnson is also said to have ambitions for the post.

Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak is again contesting for the post of Prime Minister. “Britain is a great country but we are in dire economic straits, so I want to lead the Conservative Party and become the next Prime Minister,” he wrote on Twitter.

The 42-year-old is considered the favorite in the race to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss and already has more than 100 supporters in the group. In early September, Sunak was defeated in a race to succeed Johnson by Truss, who resigned on Thursday after six tumultuous weeks.

Sunak had warned of economic chaos

Sunak is now widely praised for repeatedly warning during the election campaign against the chaos Truss unleashed on financial markets with his economic policy proposals. Truss’ former finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng campaigned for debt-financed tax cuts.

The meeting between Johnson and Sunak was apparently without agreement

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also tipped to throw his hat back into the prime ministership. Aides say Johnson is ready and has enough support. According to media reports, there was a conversation between Johnson and Sunak on Saturday evening, but no agreement was reached.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Benny Mordant, who officially announced his candidacy on Friday, is running.

Nominations can be received until Monday afternoon. By Friday at the latest, it will be clear who will lead the government in the future.
