European Athletics Championships – 2026 for the first time in Great Britain – Sports

The European Athletics Championships will be held in Birmingham in 2026, the first time in Great Britain. This was decided by the Confederation of European Athletics Federations on Friday at its conference in Warsaw. Birmingham defeated rival Budapest, who, according to British media reports, appears to have withdrawn its application. The Hungarian capital will be the venue for the World Championships next year. Birmingham, the second largest English city, has some experience hosting major athletics events. The World Indoor Championships were held in the West Midlands region in 2003 and 2018, and the European Indoor Championships in 2007. In addition, Birmingham is the scene of the Diamond League meeting. The next host for the European Championship is Rome 2024 (June 7-12) shortly before the Olympic Games in Paris. In 2022, the Eastern European Championship was held as part of the European Championships in Munich. In accordance with the decision of the athletes on Birmingham, the European Championship 2026 should be held without the main sport – the tournament management recently announced that it wants to organize coordination with seven to ten sports in a “leading European city”.
