In the Copa America, last night’s match between Argentina and Canada saw the defending champions face a stark outsider. Argentina are favorites for their part and can dream of defending their title after winning the semi-final.

Man City striker Julian Alvarez fired the Albiceleste into the lead in the 22nd minute, and old master Lionel Messi scored a double in the 51st minute. The 37-year-old headed Enzo Fernandez’s shot into the Canadian goal after initiating an earlier attack himself.

In a game that left no doubt about Argentina’s equaliser, Messi scored the first goal of this year’s Copa America. Argentina’s Rodrigo de Paul also featured prominently, not only with his through ball that Alvarez used to make it 1-0, but also with his “performances”.

In the 62nd minute, for example: De Paul effectively rolls to the ground after (max) contact by Canada’s Stephen Eustace – the Canadian sees a yellow card.

When de Paul was quickly brought down again in the 78th minute, Canadian player Siamel Kone had had enough: he played the ball into the back of the Argentine who was spinning on the ground. The referee punished the Canadian with a yellow card for his desperate reaction.

The lack of understanding among many fans was that referee Piero Massa immediately resorted to yellow cards for two tackles on De Paul, while Gonzalo Montel’s foul on Canadian star Alphonso Davies went unpunished. Davis later left the field injured.

Argentina take on their opponents in Monday night’s match between Colombia and Uruguay. Canada will have to settle for third place.
