The basics in brief

  • Emmanuel Macron travels to Washington on December 1.
  • US President Biden receives him at the White House on a state visit.
  • The working visit will emphasize the relationship between the United States and France.

US President Joe Biden receives French President Emmanuel Macron on a state visit to the White House. Biden’s spokeswoman, Karen-Jean-Pierre, announced Monday that Macron and his wife Brigitte are expected to arrive in Washington on December 1.

Macron is the first foreign guest Biden has paid an official visit to since taking office. In the past, there were working visits by heads of state and government primarily due to Covid. “It will underscore the deep and lasting relationship between the United States and France, our oldest ally,” said Jean-Pierre.

US President Donald Trump welcomed Macron in 2018 for a multi-day state visit.

In the past year, relations between the United States and France have deteriorated. The rift between NATO partners came when the United States of America, Great Britain and Australia announced a new South Pacific security alliance. This means France lost $1 billion from the diesel-powered submarine business to Australia. This led to angry reactions in Paris. Finally, US Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Paris in November 2021 to calm things down.
