Astronaut Maurer: It’s still not clear who will get the moon ticket | Sciences

When choosing the first European on the moon, there is still no decision on a specific astronaut. “The landing has not yet sucked,” Matthias Maurer, one of two active German astronauts, told dpa. He and his colleague Alexander Gerst would like to go to the moon. “We both want to fly.”

The European Space Agency aims to put a European on the moon for the first time by the end of the decade with the US Artemis program. There has always been speculation about who it could be. However, there is still no firm commitment from NASA for the flight.

Gerst recently began a multi-week training program designed to prepare him for a potential lunar mission. Maurer emphasized that Gerst’s training was a routine program – not indicative of a particularly promising situation. “We all go through the program.”

It’s a shame “to be filmed as if we were competitors only because we were both on the International Space Station.” Maybe someone else will be in the spotlight in a few years. “Maybe a young woman from Europe will fly to the moon.”
