A new home for the arts and sciences is being built

A new home for the arts and sciences is being built

Probably, the famous ticket office in Wiener Postsparkasse (PSK) planned by Otto Wagner rarely saw such a colorful audience. Instead of bank customers, who, admittedly, had not been in the gem of modern art for a long time, people from science, art and politics gathered on October 12 at the invitation of the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG), who all have one thing in common: they want to let the former build money make The house of knowledge.

Science meets art

The chances of that success are good. The list of new tenants’ names already shows this. The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) will use about 16,000 square meters of the 40,000 square meters for its research institutes. The Polytechnic University has already moved, which, among other things, uses a large ticket office with a multidisciplinary applied laboratory. From 2023, the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF) will also have its new headquarters in the Postal Savings Bank. There are also institutions affiliated with the Ludwig Boltzmann Society and Johannes Kepler Linz University.

Science with a wide range of disciplines and the arts should stimulate each other with new ideas in the former Postal Savings Bank – this included a panel discussion, which included FWF President Christoph Gatteringer, Minrad Lukas, Linz University President Johannes Kepler, and ÖAW President Heinz Vassmann co-chair, agreed.

New opportunities for cooperation

“OeAW will be represented in PSK with ten research institutes that were previously spread across Vienna. That’s over 600 employees,” explains Heinz Wassmann of Dimensions – while at the same time thanking everyone who was affected by the structural adjustments needed for their patience: “The shift involved a lot of hardship, especially those who already knew they moved home.”

But the head of the OeAW also sees the great potential of interdisciplinary and institutional cooperation: “We now expect first of all new cooperation from the new neighborhood that will lead to ground-breaking research results: on the one hand, from our institutes among themselves, on the other hand also through new forms of cooperation with other tenants Like the FWF or the Polytechnic University.”

The place of the conversation

The general public should also benefit from this increased exchange. The Cafe Exchange has been in the ticket office for some time now, and invites you to engage in a conversation in the best traditions of Vienna’s cafés. Angewandte presentation “Holobiont. Life is other” is open until January 20, 2023. In the introductory opening, two research stations of the Academy gave an outlook on the future possibilities of knowledge transfer between research and citizens. The OeAW’s Austrian Archaeological Institute and the OeAW’s Institute for High Energy Physics have provided exciting insights into their work. Visitors can speak directly to researchers about searching for the smallest particles of matter or bones discovered from antiquity.

By the way: if you can not be in the “soft opening” – do not worry. With the full settlement of the building completed next year, there will also be a public opening ceremony for the Postal Savings Bank as the new House of Knowledge.
