Girls tennis: Trojans hold on in opener

tennisnetA tough test came right away for the Weston High girls tennis team when it opened the season last week.

The Trojans were challenged early with a match against Lauralton Hall on Wednesday, April 3. A few of the individual contests were also close as Weston held off the threat 4-3 at home.

It did dominate first singles, however. Kimmy Guerin surrendered only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 near-sweep of Mary Kate Fornshell.

The Crusaders had the upper hand at second singles with Shelby Vertula taking a 6-3, 6-0 win from Sarah Greisman for her team’s only singles victory. The rest went to the hosts as Andi Rosenblatt defeated Tara Boyd 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot and Kristen Rivera held off Beth Lamonte 7-5 6-2 at fourth singles.

The visitors did have some strong doubles teams, winning two of three matches. In the top spot Mary Anne Devaney and Lauren Sell posted 6-3, 6-4 scores to beat McKenzie Murray and Eugenie Portner.

Weston’s only doubles win was also the deciding match. Although Bari Blitzer and Julia Weisman lost the opening set of second doubles  to Colleen O’Connell and Meredith Peloso they bounced back in the second. Rather than play a third, a tiebreaker would decide the winner and the Weston pair led from start to take the match 4-6, 6-4 (10-7).

Third doubles was also close but ended in straight sets as Mary Landry and McKenzie Diamond defeated Maggie Gross and Eleanor Parry 6-4, 7-5.

Visiting New Fairfield the next day, the Trojans again posted a few set scores. All  went their way in a 7-0 sweep.

Guerin dominated Stephanie Sima in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout and Greisman was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Aislinn O’Conner. Rosenblatt had a close first set against Lauren Torre and had it easier in the second in a 7-5, 6-3 win.

Just missing a sweep, Rivera allowed one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rosa Kleopoulos.

Murray and Porter held off Stef Milovic and Bailey King in the opening set of first doubles and cruised to a win in the second to take the match 7-6, 6-3. Blitzer teamed up with Abbey Roth at second singles for a 6-1, 6-3 win over Claire Burfeind and Chelsea Lopez.

The closest watch was at third doubles with Gross and Parry edging Deanna Kilgallon and Jen Carr 6-4, 7-5.

Weston  goes to Glastonbury on Tuesday at 11 a.m. and is home to Brookfield on Wednesday at 10.
