Weston Republican registrar steps down

Susan Moran, who served as the Weston Republican registrar of voters since 2009, is stepping down.

At the Board of Selectmen’s meeting Feb. 7, First Selectman Gayle Weinstein issued a proclamation praising Ms. Moran’s “depth of knowledge and enthusiasm” for the job, and declaring Friday, Feb. 8, as “Susan Moran Day.”

The audience laughed when Ms. Moran accepted the proclamation, saying, “Wait — the day that’s supposed to be the biggest storm in the state’s history is my day?”

The selectmen, however, lauded Ms. Moran’s ability to serve every voter, regardless of party.

“She is the perfect example of how town government works in a nonpartisan way,” Ms. Weinstein said.

Registrar of voters “is not an easy job,” but Ms. Moran always made it look that way, Ms. Weinstein said earlier this week. That was due in part, she said, to the fact that Ms. Moran and Laura Smits, the Democratic registrar, always place the town’s voters before party politics.

At the board meeting last Thursday, Selectman David Muller said he wished the state and federal governments could show the “kind of cooperation you have always demonstrated.”

Britta Lerner, chairman of the Republican Town Committee, said earlier this week Ms. Moran will be missed.

“Susan has been a registrar with complete integrity and dedication,” Ms. Lerner said. “Her attention to detail and willingness to put in long hours with grace, a smile and a collegial spirit are hallmarks of her tenure as registrar. She served Weston and her party well and she will be missed.”

Ms. Moran said she will miss working at town hall. “It’s been my pleasure and a real honor to serve as registrar, especially in Weston, where voter turnout sets statewide records. I had a fantastic mentor in Eileen Buckley, a great counterpart —  Democrat registrar Laura Smits — and tremendous support from everyone in town hall,” she said.

Theresa Brasco, who had been serving as the Republicans’ deputy registrar, will serve as the registrar until the next election.

The Repubican Town Committee will recommend a replacement candidate for the deputy registrar position.
