Democratic slate: Success is based on vibrancy of community

The chairmen of the Weston Democratic and Republican town committees were asked to submit a commentary column for this week’s Weston Forum, discussing their respective slates and the slate’s advantages.

I have heard Gov. Dannel Malloy speak most eloquently recently on what it means to be a Democrat. He talks about judging success not solely on our own personal wealth, rather also based on the vibrancy of our community, the well-being of our veterans, our seniors, our young, and most vulnerable as a benchmark to the strength of our nation. I couldn’t agree more.

As we cast our votes this year, I ask you to simply consider our nation as a community of neighbors. A community that ensures we all have the chance to achieve the American Dream regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, economic background, or gender. A community that recognizes that freedom of religion does not mean that personal beliefs are superimposed upon another’s rights to their own health care. A community that keeps its promise to those who have worked their entire lives and rely on a safe and secure retirement.

With these goals in mind, I believe the choice is clear. We must elect President Barack Obama to another term. We must deliver a Senate and House of Representatives that is willing to compromise and work across party lines to protect and preserve our nation’s interests and continue to move us forward. And we must send representatives to Hartford who truly share our values.

Chris Murphy will be able to join the Senate and hit the ground running. As a seasoned member of the House of Representatives who has proven his commitment to the Center Aisle Caucus and the Buy America initiative, his strong work ethic and commonsense approach is much needed.

Re-electing Jim Himes to Congress will ensure that the 4th Congressional District will continue to be represented by a smart, fair-minded, public servant whose interests are only those of his district. Jim has distinguished himself as one of the “Brave 38” who voted for a bipartisan budget.

Electing Carolanne Curry to the state Senate for the 26th District will bring a breath of fresh air to Hartford. Carolanne’s no-nonsense, expedient approach to government will supplant the filibustering we have sadly come to expect from our current senator.

Leon Karvelis will bring a wealth of experience to the position of state rep for the 135th. From his background in public finance as well as having been an inner-city schoolteacher, his unique ability to work across the aisle has been much in evidence in the success he has achieved for the Region 9 school board. A true steward of the environment, Leon has been recently endorsed by the Sierra Club.

Laura Smits’ steadfast dedication to the town of Weston has earned her another term as our registrar.

Please join me and ensure that the promise of a bright future and a country we can be proud of is handed down to our children and our children’s children.

The choice is clear — elect Democrats!
