Head-on car crash victim dies from her injuries

An elderly Norwalk woman who was injured in a head-on crash in Weston has died. Emily Smith, 85, died on Tuesday, May 22, after sustaining injuries from a two-car accident on Newtown Turnpike.

The accident happened on Sunday, May 6, shortly after 4:30 p.m. According to police, Ms. Smith was driving a Honda Accord northbound on Newtown Turnpike near the intersection of Valley Forge Road when her car crashed head-on with a Ford Focus driven by Cindy Rivera, 20, of Norwalk.

The crash was so intense that the engine of the Accord was ejected nearly 50 feet from the car on impact. Ms. Smith was transported to Norwalk Hospital with serious injuries, and died 16 days later.

Weston Police Chief John Troxell said the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
