Ledwick is Sportsperson of the Year

Sybil Ledwick has been named Sportsperson of the Year by the Weston Sports Commission. She will receive the award at the Fairfield County Sports Commission’s eighth annual Sports Dinner Night at Hyatt Regency in Greenwich in October.

The Weston Sports Commission has announced that Sibyl Ledwick is the recipient of this year’s Weston Sports Person of the Year Award.

The award will be presented by the Fairfield County Sports Commission (FCSC) at the eighth annual Sports Night dinner, a celebration of sports in Fairfield County, on Monday, Oct. 15, at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich. Ledwick is one of 15 community winners who are deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community for the past year.

Ledwick has been a fixture on the Weston sports fields for over 10 years. She has served on the Boards of the Weston Boosters Club and the Weston Lacrosse Club. She is an advocate, a coach, a fundraiser and a mentor.

Although shopping, stocking, cleaning, staffing and selling do not sound like athletic skills, they were instrumental in creating and building the Weston High School Boosters Concession program, which includes the Booster Barn and indoor concession. This program now generates approximately $11,000 a year for Weston High athletics.

One of the more popular recollections of Ledwick, is seeing her work at games in the rain and at events where she did not have any of her own children involved in the sport.

Ledwick was the driving force behind the creation of the lacrosse youth girls program, coaching for the past ten years. Her passion and coaching excellence paid off last year as the Weston High girls lacrosse team went on to win the state Class S championship.  Many of the team’s players were coached by her.

Her three children learned a lot about leadership as all of them became Captains of their High School teams.

“I am humbled by this attention…and not quite comfortable,” said Ledwick. “Though many hours have been spent working the concession and Booster Barn, none of the successes could have been achieved without the hundreds of parent volunteers who have stepped forward throughout the years to help work at our sporting events.”

The Weston Sports Commission consists of a broad section of Weston’s sports community, including the Presidents of the town’s sports programs.  Members of the commission are: Chris Myers (soccer), Rich Hassan (little league), Allison Narins (girls softball), Sean Welsh (basketball), Karen Mitchell (lacrosse), Steve Santa Maria (football and cheerleading), Elizabeth Pocsik (swimming), Jon Pressman (Adult program) Mark Berkowitz (Weston High Athletic Director), Dawn Egan (Weston High School Boosters Club), Michael Carter (Weston’s representative to the FCSC), Eric Albert and Carl Bernstein (Chairman- Parks and Recreation Department), and Gayle Weinstein (First Selectman).
