Girls tennis: Doubles teams dominate

While the Weston High girls tennis team has remained unbeaten against South-West Conference opponents this season, a couple of players have made it work to remain that way.

After sweeping Immaculate last Wednesday, April 18, and a 6-1 victory over New Milford the next day, the Trojans had more of a challenge when they visited Pomperaug on Friday.

There were a number of close contests before the visitors emerged with a 5-2 win.

The Panthers had a trio of talented sisters playing singles. Two would win their matches.

First singles, however, clearly belonged to Weston. Remaining unbeaten, Kimmy Guerin shut out Jennifer Piro 6-0, 6-0.

The remaining singles contests were much closer. Catherine Kravchenko needed three sets before getting the Trojans the win at second singles, holding off Claire Liu 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Both of Pomperaug’s wins were at singles, including Christina Piro defeating Kristen Rivera 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot. Fourth singles featured two close sets with Lauren Piro holding off Sarah Greisman 7-6, 6-4.

The Trojans were assured victory by sweeping the doubles matches. It was close at first doubles with Jessy Gersh and Kate Brosnihan getting the best of Adrianna Racki and Sydney Lucas 6-4, 7-5.

The visitors had more breathing room in the next two contests. Bari Blitzer and McKenzie Murray defeated Brianna Curcio and Rebecca Hill 6-1, 6-3 at second doubles.

Also getting the win, Lexie Hero and Julia Weisman defeated Sydney Foster and Rachel Taranovich 6-2, 6-1 at third doubles.

Weston, now 7-1 overall, hosts Lauralton Hall on Monday and is at Joel Barlow on Wednesday. Both matches are at 4:15 p.m.
