Weston graduate protests sexual harassment practices at SCSU

FI-SCSU-logoProtesting sexual harassment, Weston High School graduate Wendy Wyler spearheaded a rally on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Southern Connecticut State University.

In 2012, Ms. Wyler filed a Title IX lawsuit in federal court claiming her SCSU music professor David Chevan had sexually harassed her in 2011, and that the college failed to fire him after substantiating her claims.

Ms. Wyler alleged the professor verbally and physically sexually harassed her, called her “sexy,” and brought her to a small storage room where he propositioned her and offered to smoke pot with her.

The university concluded Mr. Chevan violated its sexual harassment policy, but he is still on staff. Ms. Wyler’s suit is still pending.

A petition circulating on change.org, says that since Ms. Wyler’s claims, other female students have come forward with similar charges. The petition has received more than 2,000 signatures and asks the college to remove Mr. Chevan from teaching.
