Girls tennis: Trojans handle threat from Panthers

tennisracquetballRain last week resulted in a light schedule for the Weston High girls tennis team.

The Trojans’ lone match was at Pomperaug on Monday, May 6. While a couple of contests were indeed close the remainder were basically cut and dry in a 5-2 win.

Weston swept one match and just missed in two others. The lone shutout was at first singles and featured Kimmy Guerin blanking Christina Piro 6-0, 6-0.

The Panthers were more competition in the No. 2 singles spot. Although Weston’s Sarah Greisman was up 6-2 after one set Jen Piro came back for a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 win.

Andi Rosenblatt just missed a shutout at third singles, giving up one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over MacKenzie Klein. Kristen Rivera posted identical scores over Rebecca Hill in the No. 4 singles position.

McKenzie Murray and Eugenie Portner fell to Pomperaug’s Claire Liu and Adriana Racki in the No. 1 doubles spot. It was much closer at second doubles, which went to three sets with Weston’s Bari Blitzer and Kate Brosnihan bouncing back to beat Sydney Foster and Kim Sun 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Third doubles players Sarah Finkel and Lindsey Kapel had an easy first set against Meghan Marcucci and Lucy Jiang and had to survive a close second set for a 6-0, 7-5 win.

Now 9-4 overall, Weston plays in the South-West Conference semifinals today (Thursday) against an opponent and at a site and time to be determined.
