A rewarding win was followed by a disappointing defeat last week for the Weston High varsity baseball team, as it held off Newtown on Wednesday, April 10, with a 2-1 victory but lost 2-0 the following day to Bunnell.
The Trojans went down 1-0 in the bottom of third as Newtown scored off of an RBI by Justin Devellis. Such was the only run it could muster, hoever, due to an outstanding pitching performance by Weston’s Charlie Ameer.
Pitching a full seven innings, Ameer only allowed seven hits and one run. He did not receive much offensive support from his team until the final inning when the Trojans grabbed hold of the game with two runs.
Ameer helped his cause by driving in Peter McGlone. Jared Weisman’s home run put the Trojans ahead to stay. There was no chance for Newtown to come back after this last inning comeback, giving Weston the hard-fought win.
The game against Bunnell did not provide the same result for our Trojans, despite another fine pitching performance, this time by Asher Lee-Tyson.
Having pitched seven innings, Tyson only allowed two runs, five hits, and struck out four. However, Weston’s bats remained quiet against Bunnell’s Jake Lasko, who struck out five and surrendered only three hits.
The Trojans’ only hits came from Ameer and Lee-Tyson.The Bulldogs managed to bring in both of their runs in the third inning.
“You don’t hit, you can’t win,” said Westoh head coach Frank Fedeli. “We wasted a great pitching performance from Asher, but I know we can get ready and bounce back for our games next week.”.
Weston moved to 3-2 for the season after the two games. It visits Masuk on Friday at 1 p.m., hosts Stratford on Monday at 4:14 and is home to New Milford on Wednesday, also at 4:15.
